Wimbledon crowns a new ladies’ singles champion at the the All England Club, but the crown stays in the Williams family. Serena Williams takes her turn by defeating her sister Venus Williams in straight sets, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 in 87 minutes.

Serena Williams defeats Russia’s Elena Dementieva in the women’s singles semi-final at Wimbledon 6-7 7-5 8-6. The longest women’s semi-final at Wimbledon in the era of Open tennis, by most accounts the finest women’s match at the 2009 Championships so far.

The Williams sisters cruise through to the next round of the Wimbledon. Venus Williams took just an hour and eight minutes to dispatch 11th seed Agnieszka Radwanska 6-1, 6-2. In similar fashion, Serena Williams took only five minutes longer than her sister to beat Victoria Azarenka 6-2, 6-3.
